Descendants

Our four children are Clark DeWitt (1955), Mary (1957) William James (1962), and Emily (1963).

Clark is a graduate of the University of Chicago and has a doctorate from Duke.  He is a toxicologist with the FDA and lives in Gaithersburg MD with his wife Mary, who is a cell biologist with the Cancer Institute.  Their children are Paul Alexander (born in 1986) and Mary Frances (Mamie) (born in 1988).  Paul is agraduate of Washington & Jefferson College. Mary Frances is a senior at Denison University in 2010.

 

Clark's Family 2002

Our daughter Mary is a graduate of Colgate and the Syracuse University School of Information Sciences.  She is now a librarian and English teacher at Severn School in Severna Park MD.  Her husband is an eminent prep school soccer coach having won two state championships in West Virginia.  He is also coaching and teaching at Severn.  Their home is in Severna Park, near Annapolis.  Their daughters are Erin (born in 1984) and Laura (born in 1986).    Erin is an senior at American University; Laura a sophomore at the University of Richmond.

Mary's Family 2004

Will is a graduate of Duke and has a doctorate from Chicago.  He is a professional economist with an office in Washington DC.  He lives in Bethesda with his wife Patricia, who is a psychiatrist with an office there.  Their children are Madeline (born in 1994) and James Paul (born in 2002).  The tragedy of our lives was the sudden death of their firstborn, Maria Susan Carrington.

Will's family 2003

The one great tragedy of our family was the sudden and completely unexpected death of their older daughter Maria Susan (1992-2002).  Maria Susan Carrington.

Emily is a graduate of Cornell and has a doctorate from Stanford.  She is a professor of biology at the University of Washington.  Her husband, Ken Sebens, is her colleague and the director of the Marine Lab at Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands in that state.  She has two children from a former marriage, Stewart Bell (born in 1993) and Courtney Bell (born in 1997); and two stepchildren. Allison Thorne Sebens (born in 1983) and Charles Sebens (born in 1987).  Allison graduated from Wellesley in 2006; Chip is a graduate of MIT.  .

In 2008. we celebrated a sesquicentennial:  Bessie and I and the four children had been married for 150 years.   One of the celebratory events was a soccer match:  Another was dinner.
